THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED ON THE EAST PERIMETER ROAD OF ^BIEN HOA AFB, RVN,^ ^(YT009131)^, AT 1300 HOURS, ^20 APRIL 1969^. THE AIRCRAFT HAD MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE SKIDS, LOWER FUSELAGE, AND ARMAMENT SYSTEM. AFTER RECEIVING CLEARANCE FROM THETOWER, ^CPT CHRISTIAN^ PICKED THE AIRCRAFT UP TO AHOVER AND MADE HIS HOVER CHECK. HE THEN TURNED THENOSE OF THE AIRCRAFT TO THE RIGHT 180 DEGREES AND SAT THE AIRCRAFT BACK DOWN ON THE GROUND. ^CPT CHRISTIAN^ THEN BEGAN HIS TAKEOFF FROM THE EAST RAMP OF ^BIEN HOA AFB^ AT 1300 HOURS WITH A CREW OF 4 ABOARD, HEADING APPROXIMATELY 070 DEGREES. A NORMALTAKEOFF FROM THE GROUND WAS MADE AND AS THE AIRCRAFT PASSED THROUGH TRANSLATIONAL LIFT, THE RPM BEGAN TO BLEED OFF. ^CPT CHRISTIAN^ REALIZED THAT HE WOULDN'T HAVE SUFFICIENT POWER TO CLEAR THE POWER LINES TO HIS FRONT, SO HE REDUCED POWER IN AN ATTEMPT TO BUILD IT BACK UP. HE MADE A TURN TO THE RIGHT TO A HEADING OF APPROXIMATELY 115 DEGREES AND FLEW THE AIRCRAFT UNDER THE POWER LINES. THE RPM CONTINUED TO BLEED OFF, SO ^CPT CHRISTIAN^ DECIDED TOTRY TO LAND THE AIRCRAFT ON THE ROAD TO HIS FRONT.AT APPROXIMATELY 35' FROM THE ROAD THE LEFT SKID CAME IN CONTACT WITH THE GROUND, AND AT THE SAME TIME THE LEFT SKID AND LEFT SYNC ELEVATOR BECAME ENTANGLED IN A ROW OF CONCERTINA WIRE THAT WAS STRUNGOUT APPROXIMATELY 20' FROM THE WEST SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE RIGHT SKID THEN CAME IN CONTACT WITH THE GROUND, 10' FROM THE ROAD, AND THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED TO SKID FORWARD, CLIMBING THE 2'6" EMBANKMENT OF THE ROAD. AT THIS TIME, THE NOSE OF THE AIRCRAFTBEGAN TO YAW TO THE RIGHT, A RESULT OF THE RIGHT SKID CONTACTING THE EMBANKMENT. THE AIRCRAFT THEN CONTINUED TO SLIDE FOR ANOTHER 51'6" ACROSS THE ROAD AND SLID OFF THE EMBANKMENT (2'6") ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE ROAD. IT THEN SLID FOR ANOTHER 28'7" BEFORE IT CAME TO REST ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE ROAD ON A HEADING OF 260 DEGREES. War Story:
Aircraft was involved in escort of two "Dust Off" aircraft that were evacuating wounded from an ARVN firebase near Teschpone in Laos. The return flight route was over the escarpment south of route 9 due to heavy AAA AAA fire encountered over the valley. During the return flight, the flight of two Dust Off, and two gunships encountered heavy fire from at least three 51cal machine gun positions. This aircraft was hit an unknown number of times and lost power and tail rotor control. The AC attempted to keep the aircraft level, but it began to spin violently when pitch was applied to cushion the landing. The aircraft hit the ground level, but spinning violently. The transmission mounts failed and the transmission collapsed toward the right front of the aircraft trapping the gunner's leg and causing serious injury. The main rotor struck the cabin at the top of the right pilot's door, destroying to rotor and causing major damage to the cabin door and roof. All four members of the crew were evacuated by the Dust Off aircraft without incident. The aircraft was too severely damaged to be recovered, and was blown up in place. from Gene Kennedy, March 2002.
