THE FLIGHT OF THREE (3) AIRCRAFT WAS RETURNING TO BIEN HOA AFTER COMPLETING THE LAST OF IT'S COMBAT ASSAULTS FROM F.S.B. KEATON. IN ROUTE THEY HAD TAKEN UP SEPARATION TO PERFORM A DAILY ENGINE RECORDING CHECK (DER). AIRCRAFT ^082^ WAS THE NUMBER TWO AIRCRAFT IN THE FLIGHT. AT APPROXIMATELY 1705 HOURS LOCAL, 1 NAUTICAL MILE EAST OF BEN LUC, RVN, AIRCRAFT ^082^ EXPERIENCED A LOUD NOISE FROM THE ENGINE FOLLOWED BY AN IN-FLIGHT FIRE. THE AIRCRAFT WAS SUCCESSFULLY AUTOROTATED FROM 1700 FEET AGL INTO A RICE PADDY 1 NM EAST OF BEN LUC, RVN. THE FIRE THEN CONTINUED TO BURN, DESTROYING ALL BUT THE LAST 20 FEET OF THE TAIL BOOM.\\
